BroadwaySF was forced to go dark the past year and a half, but it’s ready to throw the switch on its bright lights in August with the return of one of the most beloved musicals of all time.
Hamilton kicks off the post-shutdown BroadwaySF bill with a strictly limited four-week run at the Orpheum Theatre from Aug. 10 to Sept. 5.
“The Bay Area has always been a special place for Hamilton after audiences embraced the launch of our first national tour,” said producer Jeffrey Seller. “We are thrilled that Hamilton will reopen in San Francisco and play four final weeks before continuing on as a west coast tour.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical mixes hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway to tell the “story of America then, (as) told by America now” with a racially diverse cast depicting Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, Aaron Burr, George Washington and other historical figures from the founding of America.
After its limited engagement, Hamilton will be followed on the schedule by Jesus Christ Superstar at the Golden Gate Theatre, My Fair Lady at the Orpheum and A Christmas Carol at the Golden Gate. Among the productions coming in 2020 are The Band’s Visit, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, To Kill a Mockingbird and Ain’t Too Proud to Beg—The Life and Times of The Temptations. (The full 2021-22 season is listed below.)
“There’s no clearer sign that San Francisco is coming back to life than seeing live performances returning to our stages,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said.
Said BroadwaySF’s managing director Rainier Koeners: “BroadwaySF is back, and we are thrilled that after a 17-month intermission, we’re not only reopening the Orpheum Theatre with Hamilton, but will also be the first Broadway Theatre in California to resume performances.”
BroadwaySF is offering tickets for the 2021-22 season, which guarantees seats to seven productions. Tickets to individual shows are also now on sale.
